PORTOLA FLAG DESIGN COMPETITION

Countries, states, and cities have flags that unite them and serve as symbol for togetherness and we got curious about what it could look like if a neighborhood had its own flag. San Francisco's Portola neighborhood is nestled into the Southeast corner of the city and combines a diverse resident population with a unique past and shifting present. We partnered with community organization The Greenhouse Project to carry out a design competition for residents to submit their design for a neighborhood flag that represents the spirit, history, and vibrancy of the neighborhood.

Designs were collected via workshops and installations at events then opened to public voting. Over 50 designs were submitted and the winning designs were chosen by a Judging Committee made up of community leaders and artists. The winning designs are bring be printed and installed in a local green space and made into visual assets such as stickers that will become a symbol of the neighborhood.
