REBECCA HENDERSON

Rebecca Henderson is a social sculptor whose personal art practice explores humor as the humble messenger of truth. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Sculpture and Extended Media program, she is an advocate for the physical presence of words, no matter how gritty or messy, and is a frequent letterpress resident at Penland School Of Crafts. Honored to be able to call herself a native Charlottean, she has returned to her hometown to serve as a champion for revolutionary ridiculousness and ecstatic empathy.

SOMETHING TO CHEW ON

Something to Chew On is a mobile vending machine which dispenses capsules containing both a gummy candy and information about factors which contribute to the affordable housing crisis. Playing off the dual meaning of the titular phrase and borrowing from the methodology of “catch more flies with sugar than vinegar”, each piece of candy is individually cast by the artist from a food safe mold created from house-shaped Monopoly game pieces. The purpose of this work is to engage with the public in an approachable, fun way to raise awareness and advocacy for finding new methods to address to the affordable housing crisis here in Charlotte.
